The most collectible surfboard in the world in my books is the 8'6" Yater Spoon as used by Lt. Col. Kilgore in the movie "Apocalypse Now". Emblazoned with the word Airmobile it was part of the surfing sequence in "Apocalypse Now" that is among the most memorable scenes in a film that many critics include on their list of the best 100 movies of all time. The highest price ever paid for a movie surfboard was $12,300 for a big-wave "gun" used by Hawaiian Pipeline master Jerry Lopez in "Big Wednesday," a 1978 surf-themed film directed by John Milius, who also wrote the original screenplay for "Apocalypse Now."
Mahalo Senior Yater. I know I got a few boards from you through the years, and many white T-shirts. My first a 9'6" Spoone, under the name of Larry Smith, from Thousand Oaks Then it took me on my first contest trip from Santa Cruz, Steamers (SEMI"S_Finals) to Pt Loma, with stops along the way at Santa Monica and Tank's. Some how that year got me into the into the1969 US Surfing Championship at Huntington Beach, California, where I advanced to my first heat., but ellinmnated in the second. I did not often come by the shop and do not remember if I listed myself as a team rider or not. Piease accept my heart felt but late Mahalo for all your work.
